Restore Member Roles says “started” but nothing happens

Restore Member Roles shows “started” but roles don’t appear? Pull members first, use a paid backup with Assigned Roles, put the bot role above the roles to assign, then try again.

Restore Member Roles says “started” but nothing happens

You clicked Restore Member Roles, saw something like “Role assignments started” or “Restore started”, but members still don’t have their old roles—even after restoring a backup and pulling members.

That message only means VaultCord began the process. It does not always mean every role was given successfully.

Do this in the right order

  1. Restore your server backup (if you need channels and roles set up again)

  2. Pull Members into the Discord server

  3. Then open that backup → Restore Member Roles

  4. Choose the same Discord server you pulled into

VaultCord reminds you in the dashboard: only run role restore after pulling members. People who aren’t in the server yet can’t receive roles.

What you need before it can work

  • A paid VaultCord plan (Free cannot use member role restore)

  • Administrator on the Discord server for your Discord account

  • The VaultCord bot in that server with Administrator

  • A backup that actually included Assigned Roles (member role assignments)

Important: Scheduled / automatic backups do not save who had which roles. You need a manual backup with Assigned Roles turned on.

Why it can say “started” and still look like nothing happened

1. The backup never saved who had which roles

If Assigned Roles wasn’t included (or the server was too large to save them), restore can still say it started, then have little or nothing to apply.

2. The bot can’t place those roles (very common after a restore)

Discord blocks role gives when the bot’s role sits below the roles it’s trying to give.

Fix: In Discord → Server Settings → Roles, move the VaultCord bot’s role near the top, above the roles it should assign. Keep Administrator on. Then run Restore Member Roles again.

3. Members aren’t actually in the server yet

Pull didn’t finish, or the wrong Discord server was selected.

4. Role names don’t match anymore

Roles are matched by Discord’s saved IDs, then by name. If roles were recreated with different names, those assignments are skipped.

5. It’s still running in the background

On large communities this can take a while. There’s no live progress bar for this step—check Discord members after several minutes.

Quick checklist

  1. Pull finished, and members are in Discord

  2. Correct Discord server selected

  3. VaultCord bot has Administrator, and its role is above roles to assign

  4. Backup included Assigned Roles (manual backup on a paid plan)

  5. Run Restore Member Roles again

  6. Spot-check a few people in Discord to see if roles appeared

If something went badly wrong, you may get an email about a Discord restore error asking you to try again or contact support with the full email.
