How alternate account detection works (VaultCord vs Discord bans vs other lists)

VaultCord alt detection, alternate accounts Discord, ban alts VaultCord, VPN block vs alt check, ScammerAlert, firewall blocklist allowlist

How alternate account detection works

People often mix up VaultCord alt detection, Discord bans, VPN blocking, and blocklists. They are different systems. This guide explains what each one does.

Settings live under Servers → Settings → Security (and Firewall for blocklists/allowlists). Many protection features need a paid plan.

Quick comparison

System

What it checks

What it can do

Alt account detection (VaultCord)

Same IP as another member already verified on your VaultCord server

Log a warning, block the verified role, and/or ban in your Discord server

Block VPN / mobile (VaultCord)

VPN / proxy / cellular networks

Block verify

Your Firewall blocklist

Rules you add (Discord ID, IP, country, provider, etc.)

Refuse verify; optionally auto-ban if you enable that

Allowlist

People/networks you allow

Let them verify and bypass alt & VPN checks

Block scammers (ScammerAlert)

Discord user IDs on the ScammerAlert list

Block verify

Discord’s own bans / ban evasion

Discord’s platform rules when someone is banned on Discord

Separate from VaultCord; Discord decides that

VaultCord does not use Discord’s global “Trust & Safety ban list” as its alt detector. Alts are detected from your verify data (mainly matching IP on your server).

1. VaultCord alternate account detection

How it works

When someone verifies, VaultCord can look for another member on the same server who already verified with the same IP, but a different Discord account.

If a match is found, your verify logs can show something like “Alt account detected” (the member usually isn’t told in that log title).

Your three alt switches (Security settings)

  1. Alt account detection
    Turns detection/logging on.

  2. Don’t give role to alts
Turns detection into a block: they don’t get the verified role.
Leave this off if you only want a warning in logs (some owners still give roles because the “alt” may be an old account).

  3. Automatically ban alt accounts
VaultCord’s bot bans them in your Discord server, with an audit reason that they look like an alt of another user.
You can turn this off under Security → “Automatically ban alt accounts.”

Allowlist override

If the user (or their IP / region / country / provider) is on your allowlist, VaultCord will not block them for alts—even if detection would otherwise flag them. Allowlist tooltip text: bypass alt account & VPN checks.

Limits (honest)

  • Matching is based on IP among members already in your VaultCord data for that server.

  • Shared Wi‑Fi (family, school, work, campus) can flag false positives.

  • Different IP / VPN can miss alts.

  • This is not the same as Discord’s ban-evasion system.

2. Discord bans (your server vs Discord platform)

Bans inside your Discord server

  • You (or mods) ban someone in Discord → that’s Discord’s ban list for your server.

  • VaultCord Automatically ban alt accounts also creates a server ban when an alt is flagged.

  • That does not mean Discord globally banned them everywhere.

Discord ban evasion (platform)

If Discord terminates or bans an account, Discord may flag other accounts used from the same device/IP as ban evasion. That’s Discord’s system. VaultCord’s alt tools are separate and only apply at verify time on your VaultCord server settings.

3. ScammerAlert (not Discord’s ban list)

Block scammers from verification checks a partner list (ScammerAlert, 13.4K+ listed users).

If enabled and the Discord user ID is on that list, VaultCord blocks verification and can log that they were banned on ScammerAlert—not that Discord’s global ban list was queried for alts.

4. Firewall blocklist & allowlist

Under Servers → Settings → Firewall:

  • Blocklist — your rules (Discord ID, IP, fingerprint, region, country, ISP/ASN, etc.). With Refuse blocklisted members, matching users can’t verify. Optional auto-ban blocklisted users bans them in Discord when they match at verify time (it does not ban everyone the moment you add a rule).

  • Allowlist — trusted exceptions; can bypass alt & VPN checks.

These are your lists, not Discord’s.

5. VPN / mobile blocking (related, but not “alts”)

  • Block VPN networks — blocks verify when a VPN/proxy is detected.

  • Block wireless mobile networks — blocks many LTE/5G connections.

Someone on a VPN might look like a different person to IP-based alt detection, or get blocked by VPN rules first. Don’t confuse “VPN blocked” with “alt detected.”

Recommended setup (typical)

Goal

Turn on

Only get notified of possible alts

Alt account detection

Stop alts from getting the verified role

Detection + Don’t give role to alts

Ban alts in Discord automatically

Detection + Automatically ban alt accounts

Let staff / family on shared Wi‑Fi verify

Add them to Allowlist

Block known scammers

Block scammers from verification

Block specific IDs/IPs/countries

Firewall blocklist

Common confusion

“Discord already banned them—why did VaultCord let an alt verify?”
Discord’s ban on one account doesn’t automatically feed VaultCord’s alt detector. VaultCord only flags alts when its own rules match (usually same IP on your server), unless you also use blocklist / ScammerAlert / Discord ban manually.

“Someone on the same Wi‑Fi got flagged as an alt.”
Expected with IP matching. Use Allowlist for people you trust.

“Alt detection is on but they still got the role.”
You need Don’t give role to alts (and/or auto-ban). Detection alone mainly logs.
